Revision is where the poem happens
The first draft is you finding out what the poem is about. Everything after that is the work.
The most useful thing we teach in mentorship is that nobody's first draft is finished, and that this is not a criticism.
Cut the first stanza
It is usually you clearing your throat. Try reading the poem starting from stanza two and see if anything is actually missing.
Find the line you are protecting
There is often one line you love that the poem does not need. It is nearly always the one to cut.
Read it out
Every time. The mouth catches what the eye forgives.
